   First among all medical colleges in Eastern China in 1963, the former Shanghai First Medical College installed a transmission electron microscope, Hitachi HU-11A, when Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory (EM Lab for short) of School of Basic Medical Sciences established. Since then, EM Lab became a public electron microscopy platform for the medical, educational and scientific ultrastructure researchers of various institutions from the surrounding area of SFMC; so far the EM facility has lasted fifty years. In 1981, the EM Lab was awarded “Model Collective” by Shanghai Municipal People's Government.
   During the fifty years, the university as well as the local government had made increasing investment to enhance the EM facility of the School of Basic Medical Sciences. In 1977, the Hitachi H-500 transmission electron microscope was purchased, in 1985, the JEOL 1200EX transmission electron microscope and Hitachi S-520 scanning electron microscope, and supported by Project 211 in 1999, the Philips CM120 transmission electron microscope. In the new millennium, leaders of the Fudan University, Science & Technology Department, Equipment Department, Shanghai Medical College, and School of Basic Medical Sciences are all very concerned about the development of the EM facility. In 2012, as a part of the Project 211, the streamlined FEI Tecnai G2 Spirit transmission electron microscope and Hitachi SU8010 field emission scanning electron microscope were installed at the EM Lab. So far, the electron image resolution of the Laboratory’s transmission electron microscope series has reached 4k×4k, leading the country.
   Years of practice in electron microscopy has nurtured an array of teachers with rich experience in ultrastructure observation and technicians capable of handling various complicated biological samples. The current team consists of 4 teachers and 4 technicians. The EM Lab is the only researching unit in the country which features distinct sample preparation methods and observation strategies specifically for over 200 types of human cells and cells of various experimental animals. Besides normal or pathological ultrastructures of human body, the EM Lab has also carried out in-depth ultrastructure comparison of organs from various animals, including rats, mice, Cavia porcellus, Microtus fortis, Meriones unguiculatus, domestic rabbits, Beagle, Macaca fascicularis, Macaca mulatta, etc. Moreover, a vast amount of knowledge and technology reserve has been made in recent years regarding electron microscopy of species and research subjects such as Danio rerio, Drosophila melanogaster, dragonflies, bees, birds, coronaviruses, influenza viruses, vaccines, stem cells, etc. as well as cell apoptosis and cell autophagy.
   As the reform of scientific research system deepens, it is anticipated that the investment on large scientific equipment such as electron microscopes will keep growing. Being confident and determined, the Electron Microscopy Core Laboratory of School of Basic Medical Sciences will dedicate itself in sharing the most excellent platform of electron microscopy for researchers from medical, educational and scientific organizations who work at the frontier of science and innovation.
