1. The Status Quo
1.1. The Major Research Areas 
    With a focus on serious diseases, the School-based researches are committed to the forefront of the basic medical sciences (ESI), which deal with the disciplines and interdisciplinary of biology and biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavioral science, pharmacology and toxicology, computer science, clinical science, etc. The major researches are featured as follows:
1. The Persistent Infection of the Major Pathogenic Microorganisms 
    - The functional genomics, molecular evolution and epidemic regularity of the pathogens in persistent infections
    - The pathogenic mechanism of the pathogenic microorganisms for persistent infection and anti-infectious immunity
    - New strategies and techniques for intervention of persistent infection
2. The Advanced Function of the Human Brain 
    - The mechanism and regulation of the advanced function and abnormality of the human brain 
    - Cerebral injuries and their functional reconstruction  
3. Metabolic Diseases 
    - Lipid metabolism 
    - Tumor metabolism 
4. Cardiovascular Diseases 
    - The occurrence mechanism and cell therapy of cardiovascular diseases 
    - The small bioactive molecules and cardiovascular structure and function 
5. Tumor 
    - Tumor glycobiology
    - Tumor invasion and metastasis and the marker screening of molecular diagnosis 
 
1.3. Publications and Patents 
    During the period of 2009-2013, the School had 789 paper published in the international peer-reviewed journals, 21 of ≥10 IF; 27 of ≥8 IF; and 97 of ≥5 IF, showing annually a rising tendency in number and quality. The journals include New Engl J Med, Lancet, Nat Immunol, Cell Stem Cell, Annu Rev Biochem, Molecular Cell, Cancer cell, Proc Natl Acad Sci USA, PLoS Pathogens, Hepatology, Gastroenterology, Gut, J Clin Invest, Ann Neurol.   
    During the period of five years, the School applied for 94 patents at domestic and abroad, 45 authorized.

2. Technical Platforms 
     The School-based technical platforms are constructed to provide key techniques and methods for the basic medical researches and the inter-disciplines of clinical medicine with a view to raising the research level in general. The layout of the technical platforms is shown as follows:

2.1. The Technical Platform of Morphology
    The Technical Platform of Morphology, based on the technical resources of the Department of Pathology, the Department of Human Anatomy and Histoembryology, the Department of Forensic Medicine and Electron Microscopy, is composed of two divisions, exhibition rooms and microstructure platforms.   
    The exhibition rooms refer to Museum of the Human Body and Museum of Pathological Specimens. In Museum of the Human Body are collected the research achievements made by several generations over the past half century, which function as 3D textbooks as well as special pieces of artwork for medical students who explore the secretes of the human body as their fundamental steps in medical science. In Museum of Pathological Specimens are collected 2700 specimens of human disease specimens, some of which were rare ones. Such exhibition rooms are characterized by an integration of education, research and science popularization for the training of medical students and clinical doctors, the transformation of research achievements and the public education. 
    The Platform of Microstructure is made up of six sub-platforms: histological slide preparation and dyeing system, image collection and analysis, molecular detection, pathological diagnosis of experimental animals, and clinical anatomy and pathological diagnosis. The Platform serves as an important part of translational medicine, and also of the integration of functional and morphological researches.   
 
2.2. The Platform of Functional Research Techniques
    The School is equipped with the Platform of Functional Research Techniques based on the technical resources of one state key laboratory, four provincial/ministerial key laboratories and one third-level biosafety laboratory in the field of functionality. The Platform provides technical support for the researches on the major diseases.
    The Facility Sharing Platform provides academic and clinical technical services for the researches on biochemistry, cellular function, the functions of tissues and organs, model organism and behavior, and medical application. The Platform can give full play to the technical advantages and features of each functional discipline through technical support for the researches on the major medical problems as follows: 1) for the researches on pathogenic mechanism and anti-infectious immunity by exploring the new technical approaches to the termination of pathogenic infections, as mainly indicated by the researches on hepatitis virus, human immunodeficiency virus, herpes-like virus, mycobacterium tuberculosis, opportunistic protozoa, etc. at a molecular, cellular and integrative level; 2) for the researches on metabolic diseases by investigating their molecular mechanism so as to lay the basis for the advanced stage treatment as well as on the translational medicine based on the advanced model biology of Zebrafish Platform, transgenic mice and high throughput screening; 3) for the oncologic researches on the role and mechanism of molecular markers and glycoconjugates in tumor development and progression, tumor immunotherapy and others by giving full play to the technical edges of tumor pathology, glycobiology and tumor immunology; 4) for the neural and mental researches on the diseases of cerebral abnormalities and injuries using the technical edges of animal behavior and cellar imaging; and 5) for the cardiovascular researches on the preparations of vasculopathy models and functions of living animals and isolated organs for the occurrence mechanism of vascular diseases and cell therapies.
